Why Choose The Manaslu Circuit Trek?

This trekking route blends the spectacular and untouched Himalayan beauty with Tibetian-influenced Buddhist culture and tradition. Besides, the view from the trek's highest point, Larkya La Pass, is a feast to the eyes!

Manaslu Circuit Trek opened to the public in the early 1990s, much later than the Annapurna Circuit Trek and Everest Base Camp Trek. So, the crowd at Manaslu is much smaller, making your journey more peaceful and immersive.

Are the Manaslu Trek and Manaslu Circuit Trek the same, or do they differ?

"Manaslu Trek" is often used to refer to the shorter trek up to the base camp of Mount Manaslu, but "Manaslu Circuit Trek" is a more extended and challenging trek that fully circles the Manaslu massif, including the crossing of Larkya La Pass. Essentially, the circuit trek is a more comprehensive adventure, with the base camp trek being part of the longer journey.

A major difference between Manaslu Trek and Manaslu Circuit Trek:

  • Route length: The Circuit is a full loop around the mountain, whereas the standard trek typically reaches the base camp and returns.

  • Challenges: The Circuit includes crossing the high-altitude Larkya La Pass, demanding more in terms of altitude acclimatization.

  • Scenery: Both offer views of Mount Manaslu, but the Circuit provides a wider range of landscapes, including glaciers, rivers, and diverse villages.

Attractions Along the Route

Some of the most fascinating attractions of Manaslu Circuit Trek are:

1. Scenic View of Mt. Manaslu

The trekking route passes right beside the 8th tallest mountain globally, Mt Manaslu (8,163 m). The perspective of the mountains changes as you trek through different

Until 1991, this trekking route was off-limits to foreign visitors, but today, with a special government-issued permit, international trekkers can access one of Nepal's most secluded trails. This off-the-beaten-path journey leads through stunning terraced farmlands, charming villages, scenic valleys, and remote local settlements. The trek also offers a thrilling experience as you cross the dramatic Budhi Gandaki gorge and its daring suspension bridges, adding an extra layer of adventure.

So, accommodation is available in tea houses if you follow the standard trail. Although, if you like, we can arrange for accommodation in camps. Lodging and food cost in Manaslu and Tsum Valley is never constant. The rate differs from one tea house to the other and the price is also different according to season. Also, you will find the price of food to be higher with increase in the altitude. It is because mules and yaks are the only means of transport available at these high-altitude areas. The staple food- Dal Bhat is cheapest in lower altitude areas while potatoes and tsampa (a local food) is cheapest at high altitude areas. It is because rice is not locally grown at these high-altitude areas.

You will get better experience of internet browsing till Arughat Bazaar while you can also get internet facility at Samagaon. You can also find satellite wifi in Samdo. However, cell phones from NCell GSM Network and Nepal Telecom will work only as far as Arkhet which is near Soti Khola. However, if you have a CDMA sim card, your cell phone will work up to Dharmasala. However, if you need to communicate, it can be managed through V-SAT landline phone.

Weather remains cold for most of the year in Manaslu area. So, always remember to bring on warm clothes.  It is best to have 2bags. Include all heavy items that will be in rare use during trek in one bag and pack your personal belongings like money, camera, toilet paper and tooth paste in another bag. The heavy bag will be carried by porters or mules.
However, since this is a teahouse trek, you do not need to bring technical gears with you. Having micro spikes will help help you while lowering down from Larkya La Pass as you will walk down through the icy trail.

Why Choose The Manaslu Circuit Trek?

Manaslu Circuit Treks allows trekkers to circle the 8th tallest peak in the world, Mt. Manaslu. Experiencing the breathtaking snow-capped peaks of this region is an unforgettable opportunity to connect with nature.

The perspective of the mountains changes as you trek through different

villages at diverse altitudes.

Larkya La Pass, the trek’s highest point, presents stunning vistas of the Larkya Glacier and snow-capped mountains. These peaks include Mt. Annapurna (7,637m), Himlung Himal (7,126m), and Gyaji Kung (7,030m).

3. Tibetan-Influenced Villages

Restricted Area of Manaslu Circuit Trek

Manaslu Circuit Trek encompasses two restricted areas where trekkers need the Nepal Government’s permission to enter. The protected areas include the Manaslu Conservation Area and the Annapurna Conservation Area.

Not only does the Manaslu Circuit Trek have a restricted area, but the Kanchenjunga Trek, Upper Mustang Trek, Lower Dolpo Trek, Upper Dolpo Trek & Nar Phu Valley Treks are also a restricted trekking Packages in Nepal.

The restriction aims to preserve the area's natural beauty, protect endangered wildlife, and conserve its unique environment. Some endangered species roaming freely in this trekking route are Snow Leopard, Red Panda, Himalayan Blue Sheep, and Musk Deer.

Besides, this protected area also preserves the cultural significance of the nearby remote villages. The government wants to control the number of trekkers entering this region to minimize tourism impact.

Permits and Regulations

Here are three mandatory permits that you need to get to complete your Manaslu Circuit Trek:

1. Restricted Area Permit

The initial permit required for this journey is the Restricted Area Permit (RAP). There should be a group of at least two individuals and a licensed guide to enter this territory.

2. Manaslu Conservation Area Permit

Manaslu Conservation Area Permit (MCAP) is another permit. Trekkers can acquire it either at the entrance of the protected area or in Kathmandu before their departure. It’s essential to enter the Manaslu Conservation Area.

3. Annapurna Conservation Area Permit

The Manaslu Circuit Trek necessitates that trekkers exit the Manaslu Conservation Area and transition into the Annapurna Conservation Area. So, trekkers need an Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP) to walk along the Marsyangdi Valley within this protected area.

Weather Conditions in Manaslu

Due to the massive variation in altitude during the Manaslu Circuit Trek, the weather changes significantly across different seasons. Here’s a seasonal breakdown of the region:

1. Spring

Weather remains sunny and clear from March to May and the path is clear due to the melting of snow on higher altitudes.

The spring season temperature gets from 10° C to 25° C (50° F to 77° F) at lower altitudes. Meanwhile, it's between -6° C to 9° C (21.2° F to 48.2° F) at higher elevations.

2. Summer/Monsoon

In the summer season, temperatures at lower altitudes typically lie between 20°C and 30°C (68°F to 86°F). In contrast, at higher elevations, the temperature drops to 10°C to 14°C (50°F to 57.2°F).

3. Autumn

Best Time/Season to Trek Manaslu

The best season to trek Manaslu is Autumn (September, October, and November) in Nepal, which happens right after the monsoon, which gives clear skies, crisp air, and a mesmerizing view of the mountains and landscapes. It’s the best season to trek in the Manaslu region.

Meanwhile, the second best season is during Spring from March to May. The warmer weather and longer daylight hours help trekkers navigate the route easily. The view of blooming rhododendron flowers makes the journey a feast for your eyes.

Trekking at Manaslu during the winter season is challenging due to the overwhelming amount of snowfall. Similarly, monsoons are not advisable because rainfall makes the trail muddy and slippery.
