Nepal’s Climate for Trekking: A Seasonal Guide

Nepal's diverse topography, ranging from lowland plains to towering Himalayan peaks, creates a wide variety of climatic conditions. For trekkers, understanding the seasonal weather variations is crucial for planning a safe and enjoyable journey. Here's a breakdown of Nepal's climate in the context of trekking.

Spring (March to May) – Best for Trekking

Spring is one of the most popular seasons for trekking in Nepal. The weather is generally stable, with moderate temperatures and clear skies. Days are warm in lower altitudes, while higher elevations remain cool but comfortable. This season is particularly famous for blooming rhododendron forests, making treks like the Annapurna Circuit Trek and Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek visually stunning. Snow may still be present in higher altitudes, but trails are generally accessible.

Temperature Range: 10°C to 25°C in mid-latitude regions (800m – 3,500m)

Best Treks: Everest Base Camp Trek, Annapurna Base Camp Trek, Langtang Valley Trek, Manaslu Circuit Trek

Summer/Monsoon (June to August) – Challenging but Lush

The monsoon season brings heavy rainfall, especially in lower elevations, making trekking more challenging. The trails can be muddy and slipped there with occasional landslides in certain regions. However, the rain clears the air, making the landscapes incredibly lush and vibrant. The Upper Mustang and Dolpo regions, which lie in the rain shadow, remain relatively dry and are excellent choices for monsoon trekking.

Temperature Range: 15°C to 30°C in lower altitudes; cooler at higher elevations

Best Treks: Upper Mustang Trek, Dolpo Trek , Nar Phu Valley Trek

Autumn (September to November) – The Peak Trekking Season

Autumn is the best and most popular trekking season in Nepal due to its stable weather conditions and breathtaking views. The monsoon rains clear up, leaving behind crystal-clear skies and stunning mountain vistas. Temperatures are moderate, making it ideal for high-altitude trekking. With perfect conditions, the Everest Base Camp, Annapurna Circuit, and Langtang treks see a high influx of trekkers during this period.

Temperature Range: 10°C to 25°C in mid-altitude regions

Best Treks: Everest Base Camp, Annapurna Circuit, Gokyo Lakes, Manaslu Circuit, Langtang Valley

Winter (December to February) – Cold but Peaceful

Winter trekking is possible but requires preparation for extreme cold, especially above 3,500m. Snowfall can block high passes like Thorong La (Annapurna Circuit) and Kongma La (Everest region), making some routes inaccessible. However, lower-altitude treks remain pleasant, offering clear skies and fewer crowds. Trekkers looking for solitude and dramatic snow-covered landscapes often opt for winter trekking.
