Kathmandu to Lukla Flight Price 2026/27

Airlines revised Kathmandu–Lukla and Ramechhap–Lukla fares from March 1, 2026. Current fares for international travelers:

A few things affect what you actually pay:

• Nationality. Nepali citizens and SAARC nationals pay different fares are NPR: 8500 for Nepali & INR13500 for Indian citizenship, per way. 
• Ramechhap road transfer. When your flight leaves from Ramechhap, the shared-vehicle transfer from Kathmandu is usually a separate cost of about USD 30 per person & USD 150 for a Private Car 
• Seat availability. The fare is the same regardless of who you book through, but seats in March–May and September–November sell out early. What you are really paying a local operator for is seat availability and help with rebooking.
• Airline rules. Fares, change fees and refund rules differ between airlines and can change without notice.

Kathmandu or Ramechhap: Which Airport Will You Fly From?

Kathmandu's Tribhuvan International Airport has a single runway shared by domestic and international traffic. To reduce congestion, many Lukla flights move to Ramechhap (Manthali) Airport during the spring and autumn peaks. The Civil Aviation Authority decides the exact dates each season, so we confirm your departure airport when we book.

Both routes land at Tenzing-Hillary Airport and start the same trek.

A Typical Ramechhap Departure Day

1. 1:30–2:30 AM: Hotel pickup in Kathmandu
2. 2:30–3:00 AM: Drive to Ramechhap by tourist vehicle along the BP Highway
3. 6:30–7:00 AM: Arrive at Manthali Airport
4. 7:00–8:00 AM: Check-in and security
5. Morning: Board and fly
6. About 20 minutes later: Land in Lukla and meet your guide

The night drive is tiring, so eat before you leave, carry water and warm layers, and keep your documents in your hand luggage. If you can, pack the night before.

Kathmandu to Lukla Flight Schedule

Lukla flights run from about 6:00 AM to 10:30 AM. Mountain weather is calmer and clearer in the morning, and clouds build over the valleys later in the day. After about 10:30 AM, flights are rarely scheduled.

Times are approximate and change with weather, runway conditions, and air traffic. Reconfirm your time the day before you fly.

If Your Lukla Flight Is Cancelled

Weather is the main reason, usually low cloud, fog, rain, snow in winter, or strong winds. Kathmandu can be clear while Lukla is closed in. Pilots decide based on conditions at the time, so safety comes before the timetable.

When a flight is cancelled:

1. The airline or your trekking company rebooks you on the next available flight, which is often the next day.
2. Seats on other airlines are used if available.
3. A helicopter can be arranged at extra cost, subject to weather and availability.

1. Choose your dates. Fit your Lukla departure to your trek plan and add buffer days at the end.
2. Send passenger details. Full name as on your passport, passport number, nationality, date of birth, travel dates and contact details.
3. Confirm the booking. You will receive the airline, date, time, departure airport (Kathmandu or Ramechhap) and baggage allowance.
4. Save your documents. Keep a digital and printed copy of your confirmation.

Baggage Allowance

Mountain aircraft have limited weight capacity. Excess baggage is carried only if the aircraft's weight limit allows, extra charges may apply, and in busy periods it may follow on a later flight.

Pack for the flight:

• Keep your passport, camera, phone, power bank, medicines, important documents and a warm jacket in your hand luggage.
• Leave anything you don't need on the trek at your Kathmandu hotel.
• Trekking poles go in checked baggage.
• Porters carry your duffel from Lukla, so pack in line with the porter weight limit.

Check-in and Boarding

Arrive at the airport at least two hours before departure in peak season. The process is simple:

1. Show your ticket and passport
2. Weigh and check your bag
3. Receive your boarding pass
4. Pass security
5. Wait in the departure lounge and listen for the boarding call

Boarding is quick because the aircraft are small. Seats are usually assigned by the airline, and the crew gives a safety briefing before takeoff.

Three Nepali airlines operate scheduled Lukla flights:

• Tara Air, a short-takeoff-and-landing (STOL) specialist with long experience on mountain routes
• Summit Air, which also runs charter and cargo operations to mountain airstrips
• Sita Air, which flies during the trekking season and serves both visitors and local communities

The aircraft are designed for short mountain runways:

• DHC-6 Twin Otter: twin-engine, high-wing, about 19 seats, excellent short-runway performance
• Dornier Do-228: twin-engine, strong climb performance, comfortable cabin

The Flight and What You'll See

The flight covers about 138 km. Shortly after takeoff, the aircraft leaves the Kathmandu Valley and heads northeast over green hills, terraced farmland, river valleys and forested ridges before the high Himalaya come into view. The plane flies lower than a jet, so you see the landscape in close detail.

On a clear morning, you may see Sherpa villages, the Dudh Koshi valley, glaciers and snow peaks. Weather and flight path change what appears from day to day.

Which side to sit on: [Verify with your pilots and guides before publishing. Several travel sites recommend the left side from Kathmandu for mountain views. Give your own tested advice and explain why.] A window seat is worth requesting at check-in either way.

Landing at Tenzing-Hillary Airport, Lukla

Lukla's airport is named after Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay Sherpa, who made the first confirmed ascent of Everest in 1953. It sits at 2,846 metres (9,337 ft) among steep valley walls.

Why it is famous:

• A short runway. About 527 m, with a noticeable slope. Aircraft land uphill, which helps them slow down, and take off downhill, which helps them gain speed.
• Mountain surroundings. Pilots fly by visual procedures, so flights go only when visibility and wind allow.
• Specialist pilots. Only pilots trained for mountain STOL operations fly the route.

After landing you collect your luggage in a small arrivals area and meet your guide and porter. Most trekkers have breakfast in Lukla, then walk to Phakding. Lukla has teahouses, bakeries, gear shops, pharmacies, a bank and limited currency exchange.

A brief history: before the airstrip, expeditions walked in for around a week from Jiri. Sir Edmund Hillary helped establish the airstrip in the 1960s to support the schools and hospitals the Himalayan Trust built in the Khumbu. Today it is one of Nepal's busiest mountain airports.
