Best Time to Do the Mugu to Mustang Trek

The best time to do the Mugu to Mustang Trek is Autumn (September to November), followed by Spring (April to mid-June). These seasons offer ideal weather for tackling high passes, enjoying uninterrupted views, and engaging with local Himalayan culture. Avoid monsoon and winter unless you’re prepared for extreme conditions.

Autumn (September to November) – The Best Season

 Monsoon (Mid-June to August) – Not Recommended

Challenges:

  • The lower sections, like Mugu and Rara, receive moderate rainfall

  • Slippery trails, leeches, and unpredictable landslides

  • Cloud cover may block views and interfere with flights

However…

  • Parts of Upper Dolpo and Mustang fall in the rain-shadow, meaning they receive very little monsoon rain

  • You could trek in July–August from Dolpo onward, but the approach via Mugu becomes riskier

👉 Only suitable for: Highly experienced trekkers with a flexible schedule and strong logistical support.

Winter (December to March) – Harsh but Possible

Difficulties:

  • Heavy snowfall closes most high passes like Chargo La, Yala La, and Nyingma Gyalzen La

  • Sub-zero temperatures at night

  • Many villages and lodges above 3,500m may be deserted

Still, for the brave:

  • Offers untouched beauty and solitude

Day 1: Arrival in Kathmandu (1,400m)

Upon arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport, a representative from Nepal Himalayas Trekking will greet you and transfer you to your hotel in the heart of Kathmandu. After check-in, enjoy a short briefing about the adventure ahead. You can relax or explore Thamel’s lively streets.

Day 2: Kathmandu Heritage Tour and Trip Preparation

Today, you'll embark on a guided tour of Kathmandu’s UNESCO World Heritage Sites, including Pashupatinath Temple, Boudhanath Stupa, and Swayambhunath. Later, you’ll meet your trek leader and finalize permits, gear checks, and logistics.

Best Time to Do the Mugu to Mustang Trek

The best time to do the Mugu to Mustang Trek is Autumn (September to November), followed by Spring (April to mid-June). These seasons offer ideal weather for tackling high passes, enjoying uninterrupted views, and engaging with local Himalayan culture. Avoid monsoon and winter unless you’re prepared for extreme conditions.

Autumn (September to November) – The Best Season

 Monsoon (Mid-June to August) – Not Recommended

Challenges:

  • The lower sections, like Mugu and Rara, receive moderate rainfall

  • Slippery trails, leeches, and unpredictable landslides

  • Cloud cover may block views and interfere with flights

However…

  • Parts of Upper Dolpo and Mustang fall in the rain-shadow, meaning they receive very little monsoon rain

  • You could trek in July–August from Dolpo onward, but the approach via Mugu becomes riskier

👉 Only suitable for: Highly experienced trekkers with a flexible schedule and strong logistical support.

Winter (December to March) – Harsh but Possible

Difficulties:

  • Heavy snowfall closes most high passes like Chargo La, Yala La, and Nyingma Gyalzen La

  • Sub-zero temperatures at night

  • Many villages and lodges above 3,500m may be deserted

Still, for the brave:

Day 1: Arrival in Kathmandu (1,400m)

Upon arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport, a representative from Nepal Himalayas Trekking will greet you and transfer you to your hotel in the heart of Kathmandu. After check-in, enjoy a short briefing about the adventure ahead. You can relax or explore Thamel’s lively streets.

Day 2: Kathmandu Heritage Tour and Trip Preparation

Today, you'll embark on a guided tour of Kathmandu’s UNESCO World Heritage Sites, including Pashupatinath Temple, Boudhanath Stupa, and Swayambhunath. Later, you’ll meet your trek leader and finalize permits, gear checks, and logistics.
