Chulu Far East Peak Climbing: Distance, Overview, and Journey

Chulu Far East Peak (6,059 meters / 19,880 feet) is one of the most sought-after trekking peaks in Nepal's Annapurna region, offering adventurers a chance to summit a challenging peak amidst stunning Himalayan landscapes. The distance you’ll cover during the trek to the summit of Chulu Far East is an important factor in understanding the scale and difficulty of the climb. Here’s an in-depth look at the distance involved and the overall journey.

1. Total Trekking Distance

The total trekking distance for the Chulu Far East Peak Climbing expedition varies depending on your starting point and the route taken. Generally, it is around 130 to 140 kilometers (80 to 90 miles), depending on the chosen itinerary and the specific approach. The trek takes around 18 to 21 days, including both acclimatization and summit attempts.

Key Sections of the Journey:

  • Kathmandu to Besisahar (Drive): You'll start your journey with a scenic drive from Kathmandu to Besisahar (approximately 6 to 8 hours, covering a distance of around 185 km).

  • Besisahar to Chame (Trekking): This portion of the trek takes around 3 days, covering around 40 kilometers. The path moves through villages, forests, and alongside rivers, offering a warm-up for the upcoming climb.

  • Chame to Pisang: Trekking to Pisang from Chame covers about 15 kilometers and offers the first glimpses of the Annapurna and Manaslu ranges.

  • Pisang to Upper Pisang / Braka Village: This part includes a climb up to Upper Pisang (around 6-7 kilometers), where trekkers acclimatize before heading towards the high camp for the peak climb.

2. Base Camp and High Camp

  • Base Camp (around 4,900 meters / 16,076 feet): From Upper Pisang or Braka, it takes 4 to 5 hours to reach Base Camp (approximately 6-8 kilometers). Base Camp is the final point before attempting the summit.

  • High Camp (around 5,400 meters / 17,716 feet): From Base Camp, it is a 3-4 hour hike to High Camp (approximately 4-5 kilometers). High Camp is the point from which most climbers make their summit push.

3. Summit Push

  • The final ascent to the summit from High Camp involves covering a steep distance of around 4-5 kilometers. This section requires technical climbing and takes around 6-8 hours. The climb is challenging due to high altitude and technical terrain, but the reward at the top is one of the best panoramic views in the Himalayas, with vistas of peaks like Annapurna II, III, IV, Gangapurna, and Manaslu.

4. Descend

After reaching the summit of Chulu Far East, climbers typically descend back to Base Camp, and then down to Chame or Pisang, retracing the route to Besisahar and finally returning to Kathmandu.

Summary of Distance Breakdown

  • Kathmandu to Besisahar (by drive): 185 km

  • Trekking Besisahar to Chame: ~40 km

  • Chame to Pisang: ~15 km

  • Pisang to Upper Pisang / Braka Village: ~6-7 km

  • Upper Pisang to Base Camp: ~6-8 km

  • Base Camp to High Camp: ~4-5 km

  • High Camp to Summit: ~4-5 km

  • Descent: Similar distance retracing the route

Preparation for the Distance and Challenge

The distance covered on the Chulu Far East Peak climbing trek is demanding, especially because of the altitude and the nature of the terrain. Adequate acclimatization is crucial, as the trek gradually ascends from low altitudes to high-elevation terrain. Expect to cover roughly 6-10 kilometers per day during the trekking portion before reaching Base Camp. The high-altitude climbing sections are short in distance but physically taxing.

Training and Physical Fitness: To successfully complete this trek and summit Chulu Far East, it's recommended that climbers prepare through physical conditioning. Cardiovascular fitness, strength training, and endurance exercises are essential to tackle the trek’s distance and summit push effectively.

Altitude Considerations: Ascending to over 6,000 meters requires proper acclimatization to avoid altitude sickness. Be prepared for slower trekking as you ascend, taking breaks to adjust to the altitude.

FAQs

Chulu Far East Peak (6,059m) is one of the most accessible trekking peaks in the Annapurna region of Nepal. It offers a mix of technical climbing and trekking, with breathtaking views of the Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, and Manaslu ranges. The climb is ideal for beginners in mountaineering who want to experience Himalayan peak climbing without extreme difficulty.

Chulu Far East is considered a moderately challenging trekking peak. While it requires good physical fitness and basic mountaineering skills, it is less technical than other peaks like Chulu West or Island Peak. The climb involves glacier travel, snow slopes, and some rope-assisted sections, but it is achievable for those with prior high-altitude trekking experience.

The best seasons for climbing are spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November). These months offer stable weather, clear skies, and favorable climbing conditions. Winter climbs are possible but more challenging due to cold temperatures and heavy snowfall.

Prior climbing experience is not mandatory, but is beneficial. Basic knowledge of using crampons, ice axes, and ropes can make the climb easier. Trekkers with previous high-altitude trekking experience, such as the Annapurna Circuit or Everest Base Camp, will have an advantage.

You need the following permits:

Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA) Peak Climbing Permit

Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP)

Trekkers' Information Management System (TIMS) card

A typical itinerary lasts 16–20 days and follows the Annapurna Circuit route before heading towards the Chulu Far East Base Camp. The main highlights include:

Trekking through the Marsyangdi Valley

Acclimatization in Manang (3,540m)

Summit attempt from High Camp (5,300m)

Crossing the famous Thorong La Pass (5,416m) after the climb

The base camp is situated at 4,700m (15,420 ft), and climbers establish a high camp at 5,300m (17,388 ft) before making the summit push.

Essential gear includes:

Mountaineering boots

Crampons and an ice axe

Harness and climbing rope

Down jacket and sleeping bag (-20°C)

Trekking poles and a headlamp

Most gear can be rented in Kathmandu if needed.

You should have good cardiovascular endurance, strength, and stamina. Training for at least 2–3 months with hiking, running, and strength exercises will help. Acclimatization is key to avoiding altitude sickness.

Less crowded compared to Island Peak and Mera Peak

Stunning views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges

A great introduction to Himalayan mountaineering

Can be combined with the Annapurna Circuit Trek for a diverse adventure
