No more solo treks in Nepal from 1st April - Guides Mandatory

Since April 1st, 2023, it has been mandatory for solo or independent trekkers to hire a guide or porter before venturing into the mountains of Nepal. The Nepal Tourism Board, the national tourism promotion body that also includes trekking and mountaineering associations, ruled on Thursday whether a guide will be mandatory for independent trekkers (FIT) alone or for free because of safety concerns.

However, some experts say the move restricts the movement of trekkers, especially those who come to Nepal for the adventure. They added that it could be counterproductive for the country's ailing tourism industry. FIT are travelers who plan their own trips and prefer to travel alone. The FIT tourism concept includes the booking of travelers without a tour operator.

Many individual travelers pay close attention to prices.Related to Nepal, the numbers in this segment are growing rapidly as the mountains of Nepal are now connected to the internet. Nepal Tourism Board has been authorized to issue TIMS (Trekking Information Management System) cards to trekkers before trekking. "Therefore, the council reserves the right to introduce compulsory driving for solo travelers," said Mani Raj Lamichhane, a spokeswoman for the council.

Thirteen other travel and tourism-related organizations signed a memorandum in support of legislation that such a decision was made at a board meeting on Sunday. "However, the verdict does not apply to Nepalese vagrants," Lamichhane said. The Chamber of Tourism has also increased the tariffs for tourists.

Since April 1st, Nepal has banned lonely and independent trekkers from its trails

All trekkers visiting Nepal after March 31, 2023 are required to hire a licensed trekking guide and purchase the trekking information management system “TIMS”; The Nepal Tourist Card (NTB) was announced earlier this month. In essence, the ruling bans solo or independent travelers from attempting some of the country's most famous treks and extends a 2017 ban on solo climbing in Nepal's mountains. However, the NTB emphasized that Nepalese citizens are exempt from this. , The price of purchasing a TIMS card has also been doubled to 2,000 Nepalese rupees (US$20) for most international visitors.

For tourists from third countries other than South Asia, the fee for a TIMS card or trekking permit has been increased from Rs 1,000 per person to Rs 2,000. It costs Rs 2000 for FIT. The new tax would also come into effect on April 1. Similarly, trekkers from South Asia are charged Rs 300 for group tours and Rs 600 for FIT fares. Now both have to pay 1000 rupees.

All you need to know about Nepal’s new solo-trekking ban

As of April 1st, solo hiking is no longer allowed in Nepal's national parks and protected areas. The Nepal Tourism Board, the body responsible for promoting tourism in the country, announced the decision on March 3. According to the board, the decision was made after consulting various stakeholders in the country's tourism industry. "The two main goals of the ban [are] to make trekking in Nepal safer and to create more jobs in the country," said Council Director Mani R. Lamichhane.

Nepal Doesn’t Want You to Trek Alone in the Himalayas Anymore

One of the world’s top trekking destinations will soon put a stop to solo hiking. Nepal, which is home to eight of the world’s 14 highest peaks, announced that starting April 1, independent trekkers will not be allowed to venture out in its national parks without the help of a guide. The decision, the Nepal Tourism Board said, is primarily because of safety reasons. “When you are traveling solo, in case of emergencies there is no one to help you,” Mani Raj Lamichhane, the Nepal Tourism Board spokesperson

Nepal Bans Foreign Travelers From Solo Trekking From April 1

The Nepalese government has imposed a nationwide ban on solo trekkers, forcing those wanting to traverse incredibly wild areas to hire a licensed guide or travel in groups. The new regulations are to come into force on April 1st. Nestled between the giants of India and China, the largely isolated Himalayan nation offers a variety of geographical features, from lush plains and subalpine forests to majestic plateaus, and is home to eight of the world's ten highest mountains.

The country's remoteness and inaccessibility, which has preserved its enigmatic ancient culture and beautiful natural environment, attracts explorers from around the world, many of whom plan to explore this extraordinary remote terrain. Although the trekking sector is an important part of the country's tourism-based economy, the cost of search and rescue operations when individual trekkers are lost or stranded can be extremely high.
